To Read Until Water Lacks, digital video 3'39'', 2001
Fluid Dialogue or To Water Until Water Lacks, Diálogo fluido o regar hasta que se acabe el agua, C-print, variable dimensions, 2001
The performances I made during the Km0 residency question the way we use language — to communicate, to engage in dialogue, and to find solutions to problems — or not. In the performances, the water in the mouth is the vehicle that transports the words, rendering them incomprehensible, like the peasants' demands to the government.
The To Read Until Water Lacks performance consisted in reading — with my mouth full of water — a news from the newspaper EL Deber edited in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, 18 November 2001. The text dealt with the (lack of) negotiations between the community of Chapare and the National Government for the problem of the eradication of the cultivation of coca and the implementation of alternative cultivation.
The Fluid Dialogue or To Water Until Water Lacks performance is a tribute to the earth and what it symbolizes, source of life and sustenance. I water the earth from my mouth (in echo to the performance To Read Until Water Lacks).
